סיפורו של האלבום Cheap Thrills הוא סיפור פריצתה של להקת Big Brother & The Holding Company. אבל הוא בעיקר סיפור על נערה טקסנית חכמה, אמיצה, רגישה ומוכשרת. היא נמשכה למוזיקה כי העולם לא היה ברור לה ורק שם, רק במוזיקה, היא מצאה נחמה. רק שם במוזיקה לא היו מחסומים ועכבות. רק שם לא הייתה הפרדה גזעית ואי צדק חברתי. מוזיקה, היא האמינה, נוצרה מרגשות ויצרה רגשות בזמן שנוצרה. היא האמינה שאחרי שהגעת לרמת כשרון גבוהה מספיק הפקטור שיקבע האם תצליח או לא, האם תבלוט מעל כולם או לא, זו האמביציה שלך – אבל לא האמביציה להצליח אלא עד כמה אתה צריך את זה. השאלה היא עד כמה אתה צריך שיהיו גאים בך, עד כמה אתה צריך שיאהבו אותך וג'ניס ג'ופלין, ב-27 שנותיה, פשוט חיפשה אהבה וכשלא מצאה אותה בזוגיות היא מצאה אותה במוזיקה, וכשזה לא הספיק היא התנחמה בסמים ובאלכוהול, עד שאלו לקחו אותה מהעולם הזה.

הפעם הקדשנו את "ספיישל של חצות" ל-Cheap Thrills שחגג 50 שנה, עם מהדורה חדשה ומורחבת שיצאה תחת השם המקורי שבחרה הלהקה, Sex, Dope & Cheap Thrills.
